Tata Steel 2026 Results

The results are in for both the Masters and Challengers sections of what is the first major classical chess tournament of 2026.

The Masters Final Standings:

"Official" Third Place ?: The organizers decided that this year tie break games would only be used if there was a tie for first place between two or more players.  Ties for all other places were to stand with placings and prize money to be shared equally.  However, at the closing ceremony the organizers declared their countryman GM Van Foreest the "Official" third place finisher based on his having won the Masters event in 2021.  There is no apparent provision in the published event regulations for this determination.

A bit of nationalistic chauvinism? Inquiry has been made to the organizers. No response yet. Stay tuned for any update...

The Challengers Section was won outright by fifteen year old US Grandmaster Andy Woodward. GM Woodward thus qualifies to play in the 2027 Masters section of the tournament. In second place was fifty six year old GM Vasyl Ivanchuk of Ukraine, winner of Wijk aan Zee in 1996.

Time Control Issue: The organizers decided to use the timing that FIDE will be using for the Candidates tournament later this year.  The apparent reasoning for this related to the presence of several Candidate players in the 2026 Tata field. Unlike "normal" FIDE timing where a 30 second increment is given for each move from move number one, the 30 second bonus only applied here after move 40. While there was a slight increase in time to make the first 40 moves, not everyone was pleased with this change. There were time scrambles with some players exhibiting the "classic" time control management pressure reminiscent of analogue clock days gone by.  Loek van Wely voiced his objections in an interesting interview on the New in Chess Podcast (#86) which can be found wherever you access your podcasts.
